Our verdict
If you own a 2022–2025 R1T or R1S, Rivian's own cord is the straightforward portable: NEMA 5-15 and NEMA 14-50 adapters give 12 A (about 1.3 kW) at 120 V or 32 A (about 7.6 kW) at 240 V, with nothing to set up. Rivian's guide says it works with Rivian vehicles only, so it isn't a general J1772 cord, and 2026 and later Rivians need the NACS version.
Rivian's outlet guide is unusually clear: a licensed electrician fits a quality NEMA 14-50R on a standard 50 A breaker with 6 AWG copper, within 18 ft of the charge port. That 2022 guide says a GFCI breaker isn't recommended because the charger has its own ground-fault protection; your electrician follows the code adopted where you live, which may require one. The user guide rules out extension cords, power strips and plug adapters.
The catches: 32 A is the ceiling, there's no app or lower setting, it isn't on the ENERGY STAR list, and Rivian's pages don't state its warranty term. Owners we read on one forum often mention the few plug options, and two report months of intermittent charging-error stops, in one case ending only when the truck's charging parts and the cord were replaced. We list it for US buyers only.

Rivian Portable Charger (J1772, Rivian vehicles only) questions
Will the Rivian Portable Charger charge other EVs?
No. Rivian's guide says it works with Rivian vehicles only and must not be used to charge any other vehicle. This J1772 version fits 2022–2025 R1T and R1S models; 2026 and later Rivians use Rivian's separate NACS portable charger instead.
What does the 240 V outlet need?
Rivian's outlet guide calls for a quality NEMA 14-50R on a standard 50 A breaker with 6 AWG copper wire, within 18 ft of the charge port, installed by a licensed electrician. The electrician follows the electrical code adopted where you live, including any rule on GFCI protection.
What do the red lights mean?
Flashing red usually means the power was interrupted: unplug the charger and plug it back in. Solid red is a charger error, so contact Rivian. In normal use the light bar shows solid white when ready, pulsing green while charging and solid green when charging is complete.
