Our verdict

The NEXUS is for US buyers who want a 48 A wall charger that simply works when plugged in, with no app, account or Wi-Fi to set up. The hardwired J1772 model delivers a fixed 48 A (11.5 kW at 240 V) through a 23 ft cable, in a polycarbonate case rated IP66 / NEMA 4 for indoor or outdoor use from -22°F to 122°F, with a three-year limited warranty.

Fixed output is the trade-off. With no app or DIP switches, the current can’t be lowered at the charger, only in the car’s settings, so the circuit must suit the full output: Lectron’s manual calls for a dedicated 60 A two-pole breaker and at least 6 AWG copper for the hardwired model, installed by a licensed electrician, with a permit where the local authority requires one. Lectron recommends a standard, non-GFCI breaker because the charger has its own CCID. A NEMA 14-50 plug-in version gives 40 A on a 50 A circuit.

It is ETL listed to UL standards, but its manual names no Canadian mark or standard, so we list it for US buyers only. Drilling the case or changing the factory wiring voids the warranty.

Lectron NEXUS questions

Does the Lectron NEXUS need a GFCI breaker?

Lectron says no: the charger has a built-in CCID, and it recommends a standard non-GFCI two-pole breaker to avoid nuisance trips. Where local code requires GFCI protection for a plug-in install, Lectron suggests the hardwired model; ask your electrician.

Can I lower the charging current on the NEXUS?

Not at the charger. It has no app or DIP switches, so Lectron’s manual says to set any lower limit in the car’s charging settings. The breaker still has to match the charger’s fixed output: a dedicated 60 A two-pole breaker for the hardwired model, or a 50 A circuit for the 40 A plug-in version.

What do the red flashes on the NEXUS mean?

Lectron's manual lists 1 red flash for a control pilot fault, 2 to 3 for under or over voltage, 4 for over temperature, 5 for over current, 6 for a ground fault and 7 for a relay fault. Holding the side button for 5 seconds reboots the unit; contact Lectron if the fault returns.

Can the NEXUS be installed outdoors?

Yes. Lectron rates the enclosure IP66 / NEMA 4 for indoor and outdoor use, operating from -22°F to 122°F, and suggests shade where it often gets above 104°F, since it may reduce current when hot. Outdoors, its manual puts the mounting height between 24 and 60 inches. Don’t drill the case: extra holes can break the IP66 rating and void the warranty.
