Enphase IQ EV Charger 2

Best for solar homes

The one to get with an Enphase IQ Gateway: it charges from surplus solar and keeps the house under its main breaker. Without one, its extras sit idle.

Our score: 8.4 out of 10 Research-based, not lab-tested

Updated

  • 48 A Max output
  • 25 ft Cable length
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Connectivity
  • 5 years Warranty

Pros

  • Follows surplus solar every 30 s in 1 A steps (needs an IQ Gateway)
  • Dynamic load balancing against the main breaker with consumption CTs
  • NEMA 4, rated -40°F to 131°F, with a 5-year limited warranty
  • Wi-Fi 2.4/5 GHz, Bluetooth, Ethernet; OCPP 2.0.1 and ISO 15118
  • Select J1772 models can swap to a NACS cable, sold separately

Cons

  • Solar and load features need Enphase gateway hardware and CTs
  • Linking it to an Enphase system needs an Enphase-certified installer
  • Drops to 25% of its rating if the gateway link fails under load control
  • With two chargers on one site, only one gets load balancing and solar charging
Best for
Homes with Enphase solar, or another PV system tied into an Enphase IQ Gateway, that want to charge from surplus solar and avoid a panel upgrade.
Not for
Homes without solar that just want a simple charger: the energy features depend on Enphase hardware.

Our verdict

If your home already runs Enphase solar, this is the charger to shortlist. Linked to an IQ Gateway with production and consumption CTs, it follows surplus solar every 30 seconds in 1 A steps, and it can hold the home’s draw within 80% of the main breaker rating the installer enters, which Enphase presents as a way to avoid a service upgrade. Without a gateway it works as a standalone charger, but the features that set it apart sit idle.

The hardware is built for outdoor mounting: a NEMA 4 enclosure rated -40°F to 131°F, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet, OCPP 2.0.1 and a five-year limited warranty. Enphase lists compliance with the US and Canadian charger standards (UL 2594 and CSA C22.2 No. 280-22). Its quick install guide says only a qualified electrician should install it and lists a 60 A breaker for this hardwired 48 A model; the 40 A NEMA 14-50 plug-in version uses a 50 A breaker.

The catches: tying it into an Enphase system takes an Enphase-certified installer, it falls back to a quarter of its rating if the gateway link fails, and with two chargers on one site only one gets load balancing and solar charging. We track no store for it in the US or Canada yet.

Enphase IQ EV Charger 2 questions

Do I need Enphase solar to use the IQ EV Charger 2?

No. It works as a standalone charger. Solar-surplus charging and dynamic load balancing need an Enphase IQ Gateway with production and consumption CTs, set up by an Enphase-certified installer. Older Enphase sites with M- or S-series microinverters and an Envoy R or IQ Gateway Standard can’t use surplus solar without upgrades, so check your system first.

What breaker does the hardwired 48 A model need?

Enphase's quick install guide lists a 60 A breaker for IQ-EVSE-NA-1060-0100-1120 (50 A for the 40 A plug-in model) and says to set the charging current to no more than 80% of the breaker rating. A smaller breaker can be used if the current is limited to match during commissioning.

Can the IQ EV Charger 2 be installed outdoors?

Yes. The enclosure is NEMA 4 rated and the charger operates from -40°F to 131°F. Enphase’s guide says to mount it 31.5 to 47.2 inches above the floor on a flat vertical surface, and at least 18 inches up in an enclosed garage. A qualified electrician should do the installation.

Can I change it to a NACS plug later?

On select models, yes. Enphase says select J1772 models can take a NACS (J3400) replacement cable sold separately, with a matching holster, and it also sells a hardwired 48 A model with a NACS cable from the factory. Like all work on the unit, the cable change is a job for a qualified electrician.
